Looking mighty fine against the purple PPMA carpet Durham-Duplex are exhibiting at the PPMA show in the NEC 25 – 27th September. This annual event brings in PPMA’s food processing and packaging members from across the country to create a well focussed event. Paul Bottomley, the UK sales Director, said” PPMA works for us because we handle all aspects of the industry from processing and packaging through to boxing, unboxing and recycling with our range of machine knives, industrial blades and safety hand knives. The three days here at the NEC is always worthwhile and will set our course for the rest of the year.” If you are unable to attend the event but would like more information or a quote for your cutting requirement please contact Paul and his team on [email protected] or call 0114 243 2313.
Durham-Duplex went North for the Scottish Health and Safety show in Glasgow in September 2018. As ever the OLFA product on show got a lot of interest as did the range of DD safety knives displayed. Paul Bottomley said ” This is always a good show for us as the Scottish buyers understand the need for a reliable safety knife to minimise blade related injuries in factories and retail.”
Durham-Duplex would like to congratulate our Technical Assistant Gabriele Minacapilli for spending a night sleeping outside the Sheffield Cathedral in support of the Cathedral’s Archer Project. In the process he raised £190 for the charity which Gabs thought was a good return from a missed nights sleep. Well done!
Durham-Duplex enjoyed exhibiting at the Malaysia Pack and Foodpro exhibition in Kuala Lumpur 19th – 22nd July 2018. Durham-Duplex were the first UK Company to exhibit at this show and enjoyed showing off UK’s engineering prowess in a new but sophisticated market like Malaysia.
it was also a great opportunity to catch up with old friends as Wey Lim Kek come to see us. Wey Lim used to work for Durham-Duplex in Sheffield before going home to Kuala Lumpur so it was great to catch up between his work and parenting responsibilities.
The show at Putra World Trade Centre was busy and we were very glad to have our friends from NCS to help us with the range of languages routinely used in KL. The free Malay waffles on the opposite stand were also a great pull into our location as the mouth watering smell was hard to resist!
The Malay and Chinese hand outs were also a very good marketing tool and have lead to many follow up emails and calls to both UK and Thailand staff.

Durham-Duplex enjoyed a 7 a side football match against Jewel Blade played to benefit the Master Cutler’s challenge and Bluebell Wood Hospice. The final score was 4 -4 so the trophy remains unclaimed but the beer prize was split between the 2 sides and enjoyed by all. A re- match was then discussed in the pub. Well done to both teams for providing a such an entertaining hours football whilst raising over £500 for Bluebell Wood.
Durham- Duplex are very please to now be using 100% renewable energy courtesy of Bryt Energy who only supply zero carbon electricity that’s 100% renewable – sourced solely from wind, solar and hydro.
MD Charles Turner said ” Durham-Duplex tries to do its bit for the environment and this is another small step in the right direction. taken in addition to our high levels of recycling of paper, cardboard & steel and our electric delivery van we hope to reduce our footprint without compromising performance. Now we are on a roll so I guess the next step will have to be solar power on the factory roof – watch that space!”
Durham Duplex exhibited at the Med Tec UK Exhibition in the Ricoh Arena in Coventry 25 – 26th April 2018. As well as being a good exhibition straight in the Med Tec sweet spot of our partners AccuTEC Blade’s line of Personna Medical products it was also the first show for Sam Bates, one of our interns. As Sam said ” it was a great first show for me to attend as the punters were all experts in their own field but interested in what we were exhibiting. It also showed me the power of market research before a show as I was able to recognise and engage with target customers, particularly on the AccuTEC product range. ”
If you would like more details on DD’s or AccuTEC’s range of products then please contact Sam on [email protected] or on 01142432313.
Durham-Duplex has again been involved in the manufacture of the Made in Sheffield Awards. As in previous years the body of the trophy has been laser cut by Laser Cutting Service, polished by Stainless Finishing Services and marked by the Sheffield Assay Office but the base and assembly is the responsibility of Durham-Duplex. This year the design and manufacture of the base was done by Jono Burns and Gabriele Minacapilli two of our Engineering Graduates from our 2016 RISE cohort. Well done chaps!
Durham-Duplex got in the swing of things in support of the Master Cutler’s Challenge with a 5 a side football match between the Petre Street based staff and a team from Carwood Road. An hours frenetic footballing generated many memorable moments, thankfully no injuries and a rematch planned in the pub afterwards. All this whilst raising cash for the charity! There were even supporters on the side line, although they were probably more amused than amazed by the silky skills of the participants with the exception of a couple of people who really could play! Well done to Sam and Philip for organising the event.
Durham Duplex are exhibiting at the Health and Safety Show at the NEC 10 – 12 April 2018 which coincides with MACH this year.
Paul Bottomley said “We anticipate a busy show as the NEC is full and H&S is now such an integral part of running a company that everyone from MACH will also visit the H&S Show. Our range of safety knives always attracts a lot of interest and in particular the OLFA products we sell have a real cachet in the market with their high quality hand knives.”

Durham-Duplex had an exciting time at ANUGA FoodTec show in Cologne 20 – 23rd March 2018.
MD Charles Turner said ” This show happens every 3 years and sits exactly in the sweet spot between our processing and packaging machine knives and AccuTEC Blades food blade range, particularly their skinner blades. So we had a target rich environment with excellent footfall and a great location to maximise opportunities.”
European sales Manager David Piper added “It is always good to see old customers and meet new contacts and this show gave us the perfect Launchpad for both our own products but there was also a lot of interest in the AccuTEC skinner blades we had on show. I will probably be kept busy following up the leads from this event right up until the next ANUGA FoodTec in 2021.”

UK Sales Director Paul Bottomley said ” this was a good show with a varied visitor base and collocated with both Packaging Innovations and the Label & Print show so we are well placed to maximise the opportunity with our wide range of products. Once again it proved a good show and we had interest across our product range from packsging knives through to safety hand knives”

Durham-Duplex had an excellent International Hardware show in Koln 4 -7th March 2018. Alternatively known as Practical World or Eisenwarenmesse it is the bi-annual gathering for the tools industry in Koln to see customers and do business. Paul Bottomley said “This year lined up to the hype and we saw a great many customers and distributors from UK, EU, Asia and USA during the 4 days. This is particularly important for us as not only do we handle our own products but as the exclusive EMEA distributors for AccuTEC blades Inc and their full range on the stand brought a lot of interest.”

Mr Piper was looking happy for good reason as this company renowned sugar lover was exhibiting in the midst of the Worlds biggest sweets and chocolate exhibition ISM held in Koln at the end of January. The manufacturing equipment part of the show is called Prosweets and Durham-Duplex had a small stand to connect with European and global manufacturers. “This show bought very different enquiries from our normal EU shows.” said David ” In particular the enquiries were from companies obsessed with quality in their own products so recognised the quality in ours. It was nice to be able to talk about performance and finish not just price. All in all a good show and of course the opportunity to sample everything from Stroop Waffles to popcorn is an added bonus.”

Durham-Duplex would like to wish all our customers a very Happy Christmas and a successful 2018.
2017 has been good and as we all head off for the Christmas holidays the team here at Durham-Duplex may be resting in body but mentally they are gearing up for what looks like a busy 2018. So, if we miss an email or call over the Christmas and New Year period please do forgive us – everything returns to normal on 2nd January 2018.
The picture is from our archives and dates back to when Durham-Duplex was a shaving company and beards were not in fashion. We still sell almost as many “Durham” slotted blades now but mainly for industrial applications and also in our “duplex” dog dresser which might be the perfect Christmas present for the man or woman who has everything (it works particularly well on horse hair as well).
