Firstly – Happy New Year. I hope you have been able to enjoy the Christmas holiday and have started 2021 in good health!
As you will know the UK has agreed a trade and cooperation deal with The European Union which details how UK will trade into the Single Market from 1st January 2021
Part of the deal is that there will be no tariffs on Durham-Duplex’s products entering the Single Market, although goods will be subject to normal customs process on entry to the EU Single Market. Durham-Duplex has a wide experience of the import/export procedures in both EU and UK having traded globally for over 100 years but we understand that not every company has such experience operating outside the Single Market so this might be a concern.
Durham Duplex has planned for most BREXIT outcomes since the referendum in 2016 and the agreement falls within our expectations. The Company has prepared carefully and we are looking forward to continuing business across the whole World and especially with our friends and customers in the EU. The new agreement means that whilst trade on UK manufactured products between the UK and the EU will continue to be duty-free the requirement for all imports and exports to be formally declared will increase the amount of Customs paperwork and has VAT implications..
If you would prefer not to deal with Customs paperwork then Durham-Duplex has the option for you to order from Durham Duplex (Europe) SPRL/BVBA, known as DD(EU), which has been operating in Brussels since 2018 handling all our European Accutec Blades business. DD(EU) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Durham Duplex that operates under Belgian Law as a Belgian Company within the Single Market making it particularly attractive to customers operating exclusively in Euro’s within the Single Market.
For those customers used to doing customs clearances then the option to import direct from UK remains available and this will be under 0% tariffs for EU sales on UK manufactured goods.
Durham-Duplex were very pleased to be asked to sponsor a Star on the Sheffield Children’s hospital this Christmas. As you can see the business of Sheffield have made a big splash on the Hospital and FD Pam Lindley said “we were delighted to sponsor the Star. It is such a fun thing to do and it really brightens up the wintery streets as well as being such a good cause. We have had several babies born to our staff over 2020 so sponsoring a star seemed a good fit and an excellent way to celebrate the good that has been done this year not only by the Children’s Hospital but also across all the NHS.”
Durham-Duplex are very pleased to be able to support the Sheffield Children’s Hospital this Christmas by buying and decorating a tree in Sheffield Cathedral’s Christmas Tree Festival. Of course we could not resist the temptation to have Sharon Taylor, from our accounts team, decorate the tree with a selection of machine knives and industrial blades to celebrate our own proud history as Sheffield Cutlers. But rest assured that there are no sharp edges hanging their waiting to catch the unwary as all the shapes were laser cut by Graham Brown in 0.7mm stainless steel on our new Durma laser and brushed to make sure they are safe. However, if you would like some real knives then call the sales team on 01142432313 or email [email protected] and we will be happy to supply.
Durham-Duplex will be open throughout the latest UK lockdown and able to support all your requirements.
As a manufacturer providing an essential service the Company has taken great care to ensure the safety of our workforce as our machines cannot be run from home. Social distancing measures have been in place since March and remain in place now. Customers are requested to contact their sales contacts as normal but to avoid visiting in person unless absolutely necessary when masks and the Company’ social distancing guidelines will need to be followed.
Stay safe and remember “hands, face and space”
Durham-Duplex were delighted that, despite the various travel bans and restrictions on normal business travel in 2020 , our SEA Sales team were able to exhibit at Propack Asia in BITEC Bangkok. The show was about 2/3rds the normal size and although it was missing a few of the larger EU companies and several national pavilions, including the UK, it was viewed as a success by the sales team with a far more of a Thai focus rather than the usual pan Asian event which Propack normally is.
Well done ladies and we look forward to attending the 2021 event which should revert to its normal Junes slot.
Durham-Duplex bade farewell to Ken Derbyshire who retired after 30 years with the Company. Ken will be known to many of DD’s suppliers as our buyer and we will miss his knowledge and attention to detail. Fortunately, he also turned out to be a good teacher so has trained his successor well so we look forward to a seamless transition from Ken to Robbo.
Everyone at DD wishes Ken a long and happy retirement.
As face masks are now a necessity pretty much everywhere, which we think is a good thing, it has given the design team a new canvas to work on. Originally made for the sales team to wear for visits and shows we have rolled these masks out to all at DD so they are safe in the factory, if social distancing is not possible, dealing with external contractors and outside the the Factory. DD would like to thank our friends at Bannerbox for printing the masks.
Factory Manager John Bailey recently did an interview with MTD magazine about Durham-Duplex’s Excetek wire eroders from Warwick machine Tools
Durham-Duplex are delighted with their new Durma Fibre Laser which replaces the old PRC O2 laser after many years of faithful service. The compact nature of the Durma fits well into the new location at Walmsley Works alongside the sheet steel stocks.
Graham Brown, DD’s laser operator, said “This is a big development as the Durma is a very capable machine which will allow us to cut all the parts required much quicker. The software is very straight forward to use and the ability to choose between NO2 and O2 means I can match the gas to the cut required easily.”
Factory Manager John Bailey Added “This enhances our in house capabilities hugely and the compact nature of the Machine means it fits in well within our factory footprint. I am delighted with how quickly it is up and running and look forward to the beneficial effect it will have on our lead times. ”
Durham-Duplex celebrated the 110th anniversary of its establishment in May 1910 during the Covid 19 Lockdown so sadly there was no party or celebration, but it is still a milestone worth recognising. The commitment of the management and staff has been immense over the years which have included 2 world wars, Spanish Flu, countless recessions and booms. They continue to show the best of Sheffield manufacturing in the current crisis. Despite all the innovation and changes over the year that Sheffield Spirit and the skill of the engineers is what makes it work. Bring on the next 110 years!Next Page »
