Durham-Duplex bade farewell to Ken Derbyshire who retired after 30 years with the Company. Ken will be known to many of DD’s suppliers as our buyer and we will miss his knowledge and attention to detail. Fortunately, he also turned out to be a good teacher so has trained his successor well so we look forward to a seamless transition from Ken to Robbo.

As face masks are now a necessity pretty much everywhere, which we think is a good thing, it has given the design team a new canvas to work on. Originally made for the sales team to wear for visits and shows we have rolled these masks out to all at DD so they are safe in the factory, if social distancing is not possible, dealing with external contractors and outside the the Factory. DD would like to thank our friends at Bannerbox for printing the masks.

Durham-Duplex are delighted with their new Durma Fibre Laser which replaces the old PRC O2 laser after many years of faithful service. The compact nature of the Durma fits well into the new location at Walmsley Works alongside the sheet steel stocks.
Graham Brown, DD’s laser operator, said “This is a big development as the Durma is a very capable machine which will allow us to cut all the parts required much quicker. The software is very straight forward to use and the ability to choose between NO2 and O2 means I can match the gas to the cut required easily.”
Factory Manager John Bailey Added “This enhances our in house capabilities hugely and the compact nature of the Machine means it fits in well within our factory footprint. I am delighted with how quickly it is up and running and look forward to the beneficial effect it will have on our lead times. ”
Durham-Duplex celebrated the 110th anniversary of its establishment in May 1910 during the Covid 19 Lockdown so sadly there was no party or celebration, but it is still a milestone worth recognising. The commitment of the management and staff has been immense over the years which have included 2 world wars, Spanish Flu, countless recessions and booms. They continue to show the best of Sheffield manufacturing in the current crisis. Despite all the innovation and changes over the year that Sheffield Spirit and the skill of the engineers is what makes it work. Bring on the next 110 years!
Durham-Duplex are delighted to have been certified by BSI to ISO 9001:2015 under certificate number FM 721266. This is the result of a lot of hard work from mid 2019 and early 2020 to ensure that the company’s processes were in line with the standard and reflected the high quality approach of the company’s manufacturing and operations. As Managing Director Charles Turner said “ISO does not change the quality of our products but it does certify that this is a Company with quality enshrined in all aspects of our operations and production. My thanks go to Sue Roberts and her team who lead in this process and to all the Company staff whose efforts have been recognised by this certification. I am very pleased to be ISO 9001:2015 as certified by BSI.”
Durham-Duplex is looking forward to their Easter break, even in these strange times, and have also earned an extra day off from the MD for their sterling efforts during the recent successful ISO 9001:2015 registration inspection. Therefore, the Company will be shut for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Monday before opening again on Easter Tuesday.
During the shutdown the UK, European and International Sales Teams will be available as usual on their mobile phones and email.

2020’s Exhibition schedule may have been severely disrupted by the restrictions in place to restrict the spread the Coronavirus but that does not mean that Durham-Duplex is shut. Quite the contrary in fact as both factories are running to supply the food and medical products supply chains so as long as our carriers are still operating the Company will be open to support our customers around the world
We still expect most of the exhibitions we were scheduled to attend to run under new dates and the following have been confirmed:

We still await details on a new date for Propack Asia in Bangkok which was originally scheduled for June 2020

The 2 year wait between Kolschs will have to stretch to 3 years due to the postponement of one of Durham-Duplex’s favourite shows of the cycle – Internationale Eisenwarenmesse Koln – into 2021 due to the current Covid- 19 crisis. But rest assured that the Company will be exhibiting as part of the UK Pavilion in 2021 and highlighting the exiting range of hand knives, utility blades and flooring tools to the European market. The stand will also focus of the American Line range of hanging carded products from Accutec Blades alongside Durham-Duplex’s own private label offering.
In the meantime Durham-Duplex will be carrying on with business as near as normal as possible supported by both our European subsidiary Durham-Duplex (Europe) and Accutec Blades. Of particular interest this year was to be the Personna Luxury Vinyl Tile cutter which offers increased accuracy and life for flooring professionals.
